Abstract

Introduction: The main difficulties of zirconia ceramics application are related to establishing a stable and long-lasting adhesion to the cement. Aim: To evaluate the microtensile bond strength (mTBS) of bonding between different types of cements and zirconia ceramic using an in vitro study. Materials and methods: 48 teeth extracted human teeth were used, and 84 dentin blocks were made. They were fixed to the special prepared cylinders of zirconia ceramics IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime (Ivoclar Vivadent) with different type of cements. Test specimens (sticks), with size 2х2х20 mm, were cut from the created ceramic-cement-dentin constructions. The sticks were subjected to test of measuring micro-TBS. Results: The results demonstrated the highest values of 3.3 MPa in Speed Cem Plus cement. Weaker bond strength was registered in Panavia V5 and Variolink Esthetic DC with 2.8 and 2.4 МРа, respectively. The corresponding values of Thera Cem - 2 МРа and RelyX Luting Plus Automix - 1.9 МРа were relatively identical but significantly lower. The weakest bond strength of 1.6 MPa was measured in relation to Fuji Plus Caps. Results from the comparative tensile strength analysis of non-sandblasted ceramics were similar to these of the processed ones but significantly lower values of approximately three times were observed. The strongest bond occurred in relation to Speed Cem Plus – 1.2 МРа, followed by Panavia V5 – 0.9 МРа and Variolink Esthetic DC – 0.8 МРа. The tensile strength of Thera Cem and RelyX Luting Plus Automix was 0.6 МРа, whereas Fuji Plus Caps had value of 0.5 МРа. Conclusions: Preliminary sandblasting processing of zirconia surface with Al2O3 considerably improves adhesion to cement. Bond strength increases together with the application of resin cements with primers, as optimal results are achieved with MDP primers.
