Abstract
This research was designed to study the phytogeographical distribution and some ecological aspects of the endemic flora of Zaini Valley Chitral situated in the famous Hindukush region of Pakistan. The entire area was surveyed during 2018-2019 in both spring and summer season for the collection of endemic species. A total of 10 endemic species with a total of 9 genera and 7 families were collected and identified. Asteraceae was the dominant family with 3 species, second dominant was Primulaceae with 2 species, while Apiaceae, Amaryllidaceae, Brassicaceae, Poaceae and Polygonaceae with 1 species each. The leading life form classes were Therophytes and Chamaephytes with contribution of 3 species each, followed by Geophytes and Hemicryptophytes having 2 species each. Nanophylls was leading leaf size class with 5 species, followed by Leptophylls with 3 species and Microphylls and Mesophylls were with 1 species each. The research area came under Irano-Turanian Phytogeographical region, which is well known for endemic species. The endemic species collected from the area including Pimpinella stewartii, Anaphalis chitralensis, Cousinia chitralensis, Androsace himalaica, Polygonum cognatum, Calamagrostis dicora, Androsace staintonii, Tricholepis tibetica, Allium chitralicum and Draba pakistanica. During our studies Calamagrostis dicora was reported for the first time from the study area.
