Abstract

No case report has been available on septicemia owing to Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) and Aeromonas species (sp.) in the same patient. We herein report a rare case of septicemia owing to V. vulnificus and Aeromonas sp. in the same patient. Our patient was a 61-year-old Japanese man with uncompensated liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis C virus. He experienced high fever 2 days after consuming raw fish and was admitted to our hospital. V. vulnificus was isolated via blood culture, for which a diagnosis of septicemia owing to V. vulnificus was subsequently established. After antimicrobial agent administration, the patient was able to recover. However, 11 months after the first admission, the patient was readmitted to our hospital for another incidence of high fever. Aeromonas hydrophila was subsequently isolated via blood culture, for which a diagnosis of Aeromonas septicemia was established. After antimicrobial agent administration, the patient was able to recover again. Neither septic shock nor skin and soft tissue lesions were found in the present case during both episodes of septicemias.
