Abstract

Beginning in December 2019, a novel coronavirus, designated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has caused an international outbreak of respiratory illness termed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The full spectrum of COVID-19 ranges from mild, self-limiting respiratory tract illness to severe progressive pneumonia, multiorgan failure, and death. Bat-borne infectious diseases, such as Ebola, MERS, rabies, and emerging infectious diseases (recently discovered viral infections), may spread to humans living in close proximity to bat habitats. Although these infections are highly lethal in non-human mammals, it currently remains unclear why the bat host is not affected. We herein discuss the transmission of viruses from bats or other animals to humans, including recent findings.
